Let’s talk Maldives.
Everybody and they momma swore the Maldives was THE move. “Bucket list this, luxury that.” So I planned a group trip. Promoted it. Waited for the bookings to flood in…
4 couples and 1 solo traveler pulled up.
And let me just say — my group was EVERYTHING. Cool, respectful, no drama, no “extra.” I’d travel with them again tomorrow. They were the highlight.
Now let me tell you about everything else…
🛫 The Journey: Pack Your Patience
Here’s how it went:
- Tampa ➡ NYC – 3 hours
- NYC ➡ Dubai – 13 hours
- Dubai ➡ Maldives – 4 hours
- Propeller Plane ➡ Resort Island – 30 minutes
- THEN 2 BOATS just to get to the damn Westin.
We wasn’t vacationing, we was out here on The Amazing Race. If the Maldives wasn’t gonna deliver heaven on Earth after that… whew.
By the time I got there, I was wore TF out.
I mean — forgive me — but after traveling to literally one of the most remote places in the world, I thought Idris Elba was gonna be standing there shirtless with a cocktail and a Bluetooth speaker playing Maxwell.
That’s the type of energy I was romanticizing. Instead… I got the Maldives. 🫠
🏝️ The Resort: Beautiful, But You Better Come Fed
Now listen… the Westin Maldives is absolutely stunning. The water? Unreal. The bungalows? Gorgeous. And for a girl who never got to go on vacation as a child? I’m not gonna lie — it hit me deep.
There was a moment I stood on my deck like:
“WOW , God. Is this a message? What are you trying to whisper to me out here? "It was surreal.
And for that part alone — I’m forever grateful.
But let’s talk logistics. I paid for the all-inclusive package (smart move).
Most of my customers didn’t (trying to save a lil coin).
Here’s what that meant:
- Drinks? $30 EACH
- Lunch & Dinner? Not included unless you prepaid
- Other options? Ain’t none. You stuck.
You’re on an island — no Uber Eats, no little cafe down the street.
And this is at the Westin, mind you:
- One bar
- One restaurant
- A couple food trucks
- A pool table and some sand
That’s it.
🎂 My Birthday Turned Episode of “Why Am I Here?”
The trip just happened to fall on my birthday. My EX decides to fly in a day late. No gift. No “happy birthday.” Just vibes — and not the good kind.
He lands, complaining about flying economy — which I paid for, btw — and hits me with:
“You should be thankful I even came. I had other things I could’ve been doing at home.” Sir… You’re the one being flown out to the Maldives on my dime… and I should be thankful?
I was so embarrassed. Stuck in paradise with a man who thought he was the experience.
It was giving: hostage energy in high definition.
🎨 My Group Saved It
Now let me give credit where credit is due:
- We had breakfast by the ocean
- I brought Paint & Sip kits and everybody showed out
- No complaints, no weird energy, just grown folks making memories
Even when the jet skis were $225 for 30 minutes — we all looked at each other and said “nah, we good.”
🤔 So… Was It Worth It?
Let me break it down real simple:
- If you’re madly in love and just wanna stare at the water all day? Cool.
- If you like to chill and take cute pics with no plans at all? This might be your thing.
- If you just wanna cross “Maldives” off your bucket list and flex on your coworkers? I get it.
But if you’re:
- Looking for options and energy
- Traveling with a group that needs activities
- Expecting the experience to match the hype (and the price)
Then nah. It’s not worth 30+ hours, 5 planes, 2 boats, and a 5-figure tab.

This is MY experience, so please — don’t come for me.
The resort was gorgeous, the moment was spiritual, and the group I went with? Top-tier.
Honestly, I still can’t believe I made it there.
But for me? That was the first and last time.
Wouldn’t trade the memory — but I won’t be going back.
